Living By Trust
In past blogs, we’ve highlighted how we must be on guard against focusing on what we do not have. Instead, we can grow in the understanding that God always has enough of everything we need to live a godly life.
We all can learn well from these two examples in Scripture,
When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” John 6:5-9
Did you catch that Jesus was testing them?
Phillip and Andrew’s mindsets were exposed. Phillip only saw what it would naturally require, and how much they didn’t have. Andrew saw a minuscule amount of food, but doubted that it would be sufficient for such a large crowd.
Another example is found in Mark 12:41-44
Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little.Summoning His disciples, He said to them, “I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed—all she had to live on.”
Clearly, God desires a pure heart that is willing to live by trust instead of a heart that is self-sufficient and/or filled with lack.
We pray these two passages from Scripture would be more than familiar stories, but that you would take them as opportunities to learn more of God’s heart and how to be more like Christ. We encourage you to ask the Lord how you can practically grow in this area of being free from lack.
